Carcinoembryonic Antigen (CEA)

Used mainly to follow colon tumours and response to treatment.

CEA is a protein that can rise with some tumours, and also with smoking and inflammation of the bowel or liver.

It is not a screening test on its own; its main value is follow-up after diagnosis and treatment.

Preparation before the test

  • No fasting needed; it can be done any time.
  • Tell the lab if you smoke.
